Causes and Risk Factors

Intellectual disabilities manifest before adulthood, and include problems with both intellectual and adaptive functioning. Developmental disabilities manifest before a person reaches the age of 22, and include an intellectual or physical impairment, or a combination of both that affects a person throughout the course of life. Examples of developmental disabilities include autism, behavior disorders, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, brain injury, fragile X syndrome, intellectual disability, fetal alcohol syndrome, and Spina Bifida.

Although there many causes of IDD – some of which are unknown, more common causes include genetics, complications during pregnancy, problems during birth, and exposure to diseases or toxins. IDD is a lifelong condition, not an illness, that currently does not have a cure.
